Picture-In-Picture & Multi-Cam Stacking
Stack a webcam over gameplay, overlay a reaction next to a clip, or place multiple cameras on screen at once. Position, scale, animate, and style PIP windows.
What it is and why it matters
Picture-in-picture is the foundation of reaction videos, gameplay commentary, multi-cam podcasts, hardware reviews, tutorial overlays, and sports breakdowns. Skrrol AI gives PIP first-class treatment: every video clip on a track above the base layer becomes a PIP overlay automatically, with full position, scale, rotation, and corner-rounding controls. Drag the PIP window around the canvas, resize it from any handle, animate its position with keyframes for entrance and exit, add a drop shadow or border for visual separation from the base layer, and apply chroma key or smart cutout if you want to remove the PIP's background entirely.
Multi-cam workflows extend PIP into something more powerful. Stack four camera angles on a 2x2 grid for a four-up reaction layout, build a side-by-side commentary view for two hosts, or set up a main-camera-plus-overlay layout where the PIP follows the speaker. Per-track audio handling lets you decide whether the PIP brings its own audio (typical for a reaction track) or stays muted while the base layer's audio plays (typical for a webcam over gameplay). Every PIP clip integrates with the rest of the editor: trim it, color grade it, animate it, add transitions to its in and out — it's a full first-class video clip that just happens to be sitting on a track above another video clip.
How it works
- 1
Stack two video tracks
Place your base clip on V1 and your overlay clip (webcam, reaction, second camera) on V2. The V2 clip becomes the PIP.
- 2
Position and scale
Click the V2 clip and drag it on the canvas to position. Use corner handles to scale to size — typical PIP is 25 to 33 percent of the canvas.
- 3
Add a corner border or shadow
Open the Style panel and add rounded corners, a thin border, or a drop shadow to separate the PIP visually from the base.
- 4
Animate entrance and exit
Drop position keyframes at the clip's start and end to slide the PIP in from off-screen and slide it out at the end.
- 5
Handle audio per track
Decide whether the PIP brings its own audio or stays muted under the base layer's audio. Mix levels in the audio mixer.
- 6
Apply effects independently
Color grade, key, or animate the PIP track independently of the base. Each track is a full first-class layer.
Benefits
Stack any number of overlays
Each video track above the base becomes a PIP layer. Stack as many as your device can handle.
Full position and scale
Drag and resize on canvas, with corner handles, snap-to-grid, and exact pixel positioning available.
Style controls
Rounded corners, borders, drop shadows, and color treatments separate the PIP visually from the base.
Independent effects
Color grade, key, animate, and trim each PIP clip independently — every overlay is a full video clip.
Who uses it
Streamers and gaming editors
Webcam overlay on top of gameplay capture for face-cam reactions and commentary.
Reaction video creators
Side-by-side or corner-PIP reaction layout — react clip on one side, source clip on the other.
Tutorial and course creators
Presenter PIP in the corner of a screen recording so learners see both the action and the explanation.
Multi-cam podcast editors
Build a 2x2 grid for four-host shows or a focused dynamic-PIP layout where the active speaker takes the main stage.
Sports breakdown editors
Main camera plus tactical-camera PIP for play analysis with the angle that explains the moment.
Frequently asked questions
How many PIP layers can I stack?
There is no fixed limit. Practical performance scales with device CPU and memory; modern laptops handle 4 to 8 active overlays comfortably.
Can I remove the PIP's background?
Yes. Apply chroma key or smart cutout to the PIP clip to drop its background entirely — common for webcam-over-gameplay layouts.
Does PIP audio mix automatically?
Each track has independent audio. Use the audio mixer to set levels — typically the base layer's audio is louder and the PIP's audio is mixed under or fully muted.
Can I animate the PIP position?
Yes. Drop keyframes on position and scale at the clip's start and end to animate entrances, exits, and dynamic resizes during the clip.
Will multiple PIP layers slow the preview?
GPU-accelerated compositing handles a handful of overlays without trouble. For very heavy multi-cam projects on older devices, drop preview quality and final-render at full.
