Chroma Key — Green Screen Removal With Spill Control
Pull clean keys on green and blue screen footage right in your browser. Tolerance, edge feather, spill suppression, and matte preview built in.
What it is and why it matters
Chroma key is the workhorse of every product demo, news segment, weather report, gaming overlay, and short-form skit that puts a person in front of a virtual background. Skrrol AI's keyer is built for the realities of consumer-shot footage — uneven lighting, slightly wrinkled cloth, hair detail, and motion blur — not just perfect studio plates. Pick the green or blue with an eyedropper and the keyer instantly produces a starting matte, then refine with tolerance, softness, and choke sliders that update in real time on the timeline preview.
Where consumer keyers fall apart, Skrrol leans on three pro features. Spill suppression neutralizes the green or blue light that bounces back onto your subject's skin, hair, and shoulders so they don't read as alien on a warm-toned background. Edge feather and choke let you tighten a hairline without crunching wisps into a cardboard cutout. The matte view lets you switch between the final composite and a black-and-white alpha view so you can see exactly where holes, fringes, or matte holes are hiding before you commit. Whether you're keying a single static shot for a thumbnail or a full live-action sequence for a music video, the keyer ships with the controls you'd expect on desktop and the speed you'd expect on the web.
How it works
- 1
Drop your green-screen clip on the timeline
Import the source clip and stack it on a track above your background plate, image, or AI-generated scene.
- 2
Pick the key color
Click the eyedropper in the Chroma Key panel and click any pixel of the green or blue background. The keyer builds a starting matte instantly.
- 3
Refine tolerance and softness
Widen tolerance to remove faint reflections, raise softness to feather the matte edge, and pull choke in slightly to tighten hair.
- 4
Suppress spill
Enable spill suppression and dial in the strength to neutralize green or blue color cast on skin, hair, and translucent fabrics.
- 5
Switch to matte view to QA
Toggle the alpha matte preview to see your key in pure black and white. Everything you want kept should be solid white with no holes.
- 6
Composite over your background
Place a new background — a still image, an AI-generated plate, or another video clip — on the track below and the composite renders live.
Benefits
Real-time keying
Adjust tolerance, softness, and spill while the timeline plays — no offline render, no preview pause.
Hair and edge detail
Edge feather and choke handle hair wisps and motion blur without crunching them into cardboard.
Spill suppression that works
Neutralize green and blue contamination on skin and hair without desaturating the whole subject.
Matte QA built in
One-click matte view shows your alpha as a black-and-white preview so you can spot holes before exporting.
Who uses it
Streamers and gaming creators
Key out a webcam green screen for face-cam overlays, then composite over gameplay capture or a custom scene.
Product demo videographers
Place presenters in front of branded animated backgrounds without renting a virtual studio.
Educational content creators
Stand in front of slides, simulations, or 3D models with a clean key that holds up at presentation scale.
Music video editors
Drop performers into AI-generated dreamscapes and stylized environments with a hair-detail-safe key.
Short-form social creators
Shoot vertical 9:16 segments against any green wall, then composite straight into TikTok, Reels, or Shorts cuts.
Frequently asked questions
Does the keyer work on blue screen as well as green?
Yes. The eyedropper picks any color, so blue, magenta, or even custom-painted backdrops work the same way as green.
What if my green screen is unevenly lit?
Use a wider tolerance plus stronger softness to absorb the variation, or stack a second key with a different sample point to clean the brighter or darker zones.
Can I key without a green screen?
For non-green backgrounds, use the Smart Cutout feature instead — it uses an AI mask to isolate the subject without a colored backdrop.
Does the key survive hair and motion blur?
Edge feather plus a small amount of choke preserves wisps and motion-blurred edges. Switch to matte view to dial it in precisely.
Will spill suppression desaturate my whole subject?
No. Suppression is targeted at the keyed color band only, so skin tones and clothing in unrelated colors stay intact.
Is keyed footage uploaded to a server?
No. Keying happens locally in your browser using GPU shaders. Source clips never leave your device.
