AI Smart Cutout — Isolate Any Subject, No Green Screen
Pull clean subject masks from ordinary footage. The AI segments people, pets, and products frame by frame so you can swap, blur, or compose backgrounds.
What it is and why it matters
Smart Cutout is the modern answer to the question every editor has asked: what if I could chroma key without a green screen? Skrrol AI's smart cutout uses an on-device AI segmentation model to isolate the most prominent subject in your shot — a person, a pet, a product, a vehicle — and produces a per-frame alpha matte you can use exactly like a green-screen key. There is no special studio gear required and no learning curve to a complex rotoscoping workflow. Drop a clip on the timeline, click Smart Cutout, and the model produces a clean subject mask within seconds.
The difference between a basic cutout and a usable cutout is the matte quality, and that's where Skrrol invests. Edge refinement softens the matte boundary so hair and fur look real instead of cardboard-cut. Temporal smoothing reduces the flicker that plagues frame-by-frame AI masks. A manual brush lets you paint corrections into specific frames — adding pixels you want to keep or subtracting pixels you want to drop — and those corrections propagate across nearby frames automatically. The result is the kind of clean subject isolation that used to require a roto artist or a controlled green-screen shoot, now available in a browser tab on whatever device you happen to be editing on.
How it works
- 1
Drop your clip on the timeline
Import any video — phone footage, webcam, drone, archive — and place it on a video track. No special shooting setup required.
- 2
Run Smart Cutout
Select the clip, open the AI panel, and click Smart Cutout. The model processes the clip locally and produces a per-frame alpha mask.
- 3
Refine the matte
Use edge softness and choke to tune the boundary. For hair and fur, raise softness slightly; for hard product edges, raise choke instead.
- 4
Brush in corrections
Switch to manual brush mode and paint pixels back in or out on any keyframe. Corrections interpolate to neighboring frames automatically.
- 5
Composite over a new background
Place a still image, AI plate, or video clip on the track below — the cutout composites live with no separate render step.
- 6
Export with alpha if needed
Export the cutout as a transparent WebM with alpha channel for use in other tools, or render the final composite straight to MP4.
Benefits
No green screen required
AI segmentation works on ordinary footage shot anywhere — your kitchen, a park, a stage, a moving car.
Hair and fur safe
Edge refinement keeps wisps and fur strands intact instead of crunching them into a hard cardboard outline.
Brush-based corrections
Paint pixels in or out on any keyframe and let temporal smoothing carry the fix across surrounding frames.
Local AI inference
The segmentation model runs on your device. No upload, no queue, no privacy compromise.
Who uses it
Product photographers and videographers
Isolate a product from a busy shoot location and drop it onto a clean studio backdrop in post.
Course creators and educators
Cut yourself out of a home recording and overlay onto slide content without a real green screen rig.
Pet content creators
Extract pets from messy backgrounds and place them in fun composites without a multi-stage roto job.
Social media editors
Build vertical reels where the subject moves freely on top of motion graphics or animated backgrounds.
AI-augmented storytellers
Combine real footage with AI-generated scenery — drop yourself into a Sora-generated landscape with a clean cutout.
Frequently asked questions
How does this differ from chroma key?
Chroma key needs a uniform-colored backdrop. Smart Cutout uses AI to segment the subject from any background, so it works on footage you didn't plan to key.
Does it handle multiple subjects?
Yes. The model isolates the dominant subject by default; for multi-subject shots, run cutout on duplicate copies of the clip and use brush corrections to select different people in each pass.
Will the matte flicker frame to frame?
Temporal smoothing minimizes flicker, and where it shows up, the manual brush lets you fix specific frames with corrections that propagate forward.
Does it run on my device or in the cloud?
On your device. The segmentation model runs locally so source video never leaves your browser.
Can I export with transparency?
Yes. Export as WebM with the alpha channel enabled to keep transparency, or composite onto a new background and export to MP4.
How long does processing take?
Most short clips process in seconds on a modern laptop. Longer clips and 4K sources scale roughly linearly with length.
