Video Cropper — Reframe Any Clip To Any Aspect

Crop video to any aspect ratio with free or preset framing. Animate the crop with keyframes, track a subject for auto-reframe, and export at original quality.

What it is and why it matters

Cropping video sounds simple until you actually need it to work well. Most online croppers are just static rectangles — useful for chopping the edges off a single shot, useless for reframing footage that needs to follow a subject across the frame. Skrrol AI's cropper covers both jobs. Free crop and preset aspect ratios (16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 21:9, custom) handle straightforward reframing in seconds. Keyframed crop animation lets you start with one framing and end with another — essential for reframing a horizontal interview into a vertical Reel where the speaker moves around the original frame. Subject-tracked auto-crop uses an on-device AI model to follow a face or product through the shot and keep it centered automatically.

The cropper integrates with the rest of the editor instead of replacing it. Crop a clip, then color grade it. Crop a clip, then add transitions. Crop a clip, then export at the cropped aspect — Skrrol writes a clean output at the new dimensions without letterboxing. For social platforms with mandatory aspect ratios (TikTok 9:16, Instagram 1:1 or 4:5, YouTube 16:9), the preset ratios save time, and the export pipeline writes the right metadata so platforms display the video correctly. Source video stays on your device throughout — no upload, no third-party processing, no privacy compromise on personal or client footage.

How it works

  1. 1

    Select the clip to crop

Click any video clip on the timeline. The Crop panel opens in the inspector with a live crop overlay on the canvas.

  2. 2

Pick a ratio or free crop

Choose 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 21:9, or Free, and drag the crop rectangle to your desired framing.

  3. 3

    Animate with keyframes

Set a starting crop, move the playhead, change the crop position — the editor interpolates a smooth pan between the two.

  4. 4

    Use subject tracking (optional)

Click Track Subject and select the person or object to follow. The AI keeps the subject centered as it moves through the frame.

  5. 5

    Preview the result

Scrub through the clip to see the final framed output. Adjust the crop rectangle on any keyframe to refine the path.

  6. 6

    Export at the cropped aspect

Set the project frame size to match the crop ratio (or pick from the social presets) and export. The output writes at the new dimensions.

Benefits

Free or preset ratios

Drag freely or lock to 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, 21:9 — the social and broadcast aspects covered out of the box.

Keyframed reframing

Animate the crop position over time so you can pan a horizontal source through a vertical frame.

AI subject tracking

Lock onto a face or product and the crop follows the subject through the entire clip — no manual keyframes.

Native-resolution export

Output writes at the cropped dimensions without letterboxing, so the file matches the platform spec.

Who uses it

Social media editors

Reframe horizontal source footage into 9:16 vertical for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts.

Podcast video editors

Crop a wide multi-host shot into per-host close-ups for cut-aways and vertical clip exports.

Sports editors

Use subject tracking to follow a player across the frame even when the original shot was wide.

Course creators

Crop tighter into a presenter's face for emphasis without re-shooting the lesson.

Photographers and videographers

Reframe a 16:9 capture into a 4:5 portrait or 1:1 square for Instagram delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Will cropping reduce quality?

Cropping discards pixels outside the crop rectangle, so output resolution is the cropped dimensions. Source quality inside the crop is preserved exactly.

Can I auto-crop based on the subject?

Yes. Click Track Subject, select the person or object to follow, and the AI keeps it centered through the clip with smoothing applied to avoid jitter.

Does the cropper handle vertical source?

Yes. Vertical 9:16 source can be cropped into 1:1 or 16:9 with the same tools — preset ratios all work in both orientations.

Can I keyframe the crop?

Yes. Drop keyframes on crop position and size at different points in the clip, and the editor animates a smooth ramp between them.

Does the crop affect audio?

No. Audio passes through unaffected — cropping is a picture-only operation.
